Butters

Sokkwi LOVES to be in the kitchen whenever I am fixing food. He especially loves to perch upon my shoulder and watch while I wash dishes. He will scamper right up my pants leg and up my back to ride on my shoulder.

The other day I was baking cookies and had a bowl of hot melted butter that I had just taken out of the microwave when Sokkwi decided to try and run up my leg. This resulted in me spilling half the butter onto him, myself and the floor. It was quite entertaining watching him give himself a bath for the rest of the day. He smelled like butter for a week. Since he sleeps on my chest half the time, I kept on having dreams about popcorn.

He's earned himself the new nickname "Butters".

Agamay/ Sea Gull

Our school secretary invited us out to her beach house in Agamay last week. Agamay is a smaller town about 45 minutes outside of Alexandria. It is known to be the nice beach area where there are a lot of high end summer beach houses for the elite of Alexandria. Although, it's is also were all the factories, oil refineries and shipping harbor is; so I didn't think it looked like that nice of an area. But the beach was nice, although cold today and the company and the relaxing day with friends was great.

This weekend we ventured out to Agamay again to go to the Sea Gull with a large number of fellow staff members. Sea Gull is a very famous fish restaurant. One of the reasons it is so famous is due to the fact that they keep exotic animals in cages like monkeys and crocodiles. It's not very humane and for people that care about that (like me) it's not a nice place. However, I'm told that their treatment of animals is a lot better than a few years ago and then no longer keep tigers and such in small cages. It is also a huge place decorated with tons of old antiques. Think, T.G.I.F but with a lot more junk, and actually interesting junk on their walls.

At a fish restaurant, you have to pick from fresh fish or other seafood, caught that day, barter for the price your willing to pay per ounce and order how you would like them to cook your fish. It's always very interesting.

Soad El Serafy Orphanage

Every high school class is responsible for performing a service project sometime during the year. This year's freshman class (along with Jean Melek - my co-advisor and I) decided to have a pizza/bake sale to raise money for a local orphanage. The kids did great and we used some of the money to buy new toys and the majority went as a cash donation. We were met by the director who fed us (amazing hospitality!) and then showed us around the grounds so we could see some of the bedrooms, where they ate, a couple classrooms, and where the elderly stay. They serve over 400 people, very few of whom actually live there.

It was a great day. The kids played soccer, colored, and tossed balls around with the children for a few hours and I even made a couple young friends. The little ones were so cute! It really is a shame that Egypt doesn't allow foreign adoptions. However, it was pretty difficult to converse with the kids with my limited knowledge of Arabic. I had to have my students translate which the little kids got a kick out of. All in all, it was a successful day and we were very proud of our students and their willingness to give of themselves to others who are much less fortunate. I hope to make another trip there sometime.

Big Helper

Sokkwi is a big help when we babysit Malcolm, he's very calm around the baby and Malcolm is just memorized by him so it always makes for a nice evening.

Montazah Beach

Seth organized a nice afternoon out with some of our friends to the Montazah beach. Montazah is the old Kings summer palace here in Alexandria. It is still used by the Present today as his summer beach house but a lot of the palace and gardens are now open to the public and some buildings have been re-done into hotels and apartments. Some of our local staff and a lot of our students families have private beach cabins here on the private beaches. We've been invited to some of them before and enjoy being there since the dress is a lot more "western" meaning I could wear a swim suit. Today we went to the public beach and all of us girls didn't feel comfortable taking off our tops and shorts do to the large number of covered women around.

Ronny and Julie

The 8th graders put on a modernization of Romeo and Juliet. They did a real nice job and the play was very cute. It was great to see them work together and really show their best effort with this project.

If you want to see some of the students we work with go to Class Photos. As you can see, the 7th graders are my Advisory Class and the 9th graders are Seth's. However, Seth and I both teach 7th and 8th. Seth also works with some 9th and 10th graders too. However, for being such a small school we pretty much interact with most of the kids at some point in time.
